Pros and Cons of Globalization

Pros

- Globalization is the logical, "natural" expression of modern international capitalism
- New wealth will "trickle down" from rich to poor (countries and individuals)
- Globalization will spread benefits of new ideas and technologies
- The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) loan money to nations so they can invest in business
- The world's poor countries will catch up to the rich ones
- Each country can produce to goods for which it is best suited.

Cons

- Globalization is a policy promote by core countries; it results in inequities between "haves" and "have nots"
- It's just not working in the last 20 years, rich countries have grown richer, while the poor have become more impoverished
- It promotes free-market, export-oriented economies at the expense of localized, sustainable economies.
- The World Bank, the IMF and the WTO interfere with a nation's decision-making power
- It's not fair : the richest 20% of the world's people consume 86% of the world's resources
- The whole economic system is very unstable, too easy for a crisis to escalate

Population and Settlement

population raise

- over 7 billion people on the planet right now
- increasing by over 73 million per year
- by approx. 201, 000 per day (in 2013)
- 8377 per hour
- 140 per minute
- 2.3 per second
- 90% of this population growth takes place in the developing countries of Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America

Workers in Nike factory

Today we watched a video in human geography class. This video talked about the treatment of people who worked in Nike factories in Indonesia.
Nike is one of the largest sport wearing company in the world, and it has many factories especially in developing countries because of the lower wage of workers. In this video, we saw some workers in Indonesia Nike factory, they worked for a long time every day but only make a few money which is much lower than American workers. They make less than 10 dollars wage every week and I think it is even not enough for them to eat well. But this low salary in Indonesia is legal because the government didn't make the policy about the minimum wage of workers, which may be because they want to let the cheap labor power be an advantage of their country. Nike company set up factories here because they wanted to save money from laborers although it was not good.
And the living condition of workers are also terrible. They lived in a 9*9 room with their family, and this room is only as big as a small part of our classroom. They also shared other things with many people, like kitchen or bathroom. Some of them have already fought against the Nike company because of the wage and condition, but they failed in the end. I think Nike company did the wrong thing about that, and they should pay more wage for Indonesia workers and make the living condition for them better. It is unimaginative that how they survive in such a sweatshop.

Muslim and atheism

Muslim

We watched a video called "I'm Muslim but I'm not.." during the class. In this video, it shows us that most of the Muslims are same as us, they have their own lives. They like dancing, like listening to the music, like Thanksgiving, like football, which are similar to our hobbies. Muslims only are some people who believe in Islam, they are not terrorists. "I'm Muslim but I'm not angry." "I'm Muslim but I'm not dangerous." "I'm Muslim but I'm not terrorist." "I'm Muslim but I'm not stopped at airport." Some people have a prejudice about Muslim since 9.11, and they always forget that. I think people need to know more about Muslim, and treat them as normal people, because the difference between Muslim and us only is the religion.

P.S. Mrs.Schick shared this video on Facebook, but only 4 people agreed with that, but I think there should be more.

Atheism

There are more and more atheism every year in the world. Atheism is people who don't believe any gods but believe science, although some of them may read the Bible or some other things about religion. And most of people in China are atheism.

Globalization with other things

Communication

Communication influences the globalization a lot.  People can read global news as quickly as local news by the Internet, and also become aware and respond quickly about the things that happened far away from here. Now almost every people has their own cell phone which help them communicate easily, and the global news network also helps people all around the world see the same news in 24 hours.

Travel

Globalization increases by the international travel. Nowadays there are more and more migrant workers, they leave their own country, make a long or short travel to find jobs. Also more and more people decide to go abroad during the vacation, and most of them are from developing country. They may feel comfortable with the Western service, be familiar with the different culture, and change their idea after traveling, which will influence their country.

Popular culture

Globalization sometimes makes one country's culture be popular in other countries. And the clothes style also will be more uniform around the world. For example, most of countries think that professionals need to wear suit and young people would like to wear T-shirt and jeans. Nowadays people also eat more meat and sugar than before because of the globalization of American fast-food. But the same brand fast-food in different country will have a little differences with that in local.

Economy

International economy is vital to most of countries, and big companies now much more rely on the international trade than in the past. Some of countries even make the free trade agreement to stop charging tariffs or taxes and help develop the economy. And now it's more convenient for different countries' companies to cooperate with each other.

More about globalization

Silk Road

Silk Road is an old representation of the globalization. It connects markets of ancient China and Mediterranean. In the past, people in different countries exchanged their knowledge, goods and culture by this route, such as silk, spices and porcelain. It is still used until today for poor people to trade with each other and get money.

The Christian

Globalization makes religion spreads far beyond the original areas. When Jesus lived in the world, he didn't travel to many places. However, his ideas were spread all around the world. It's because that he told his stories to his followers, and then some of his followers traveled to somewhere and spread Jesus' ideas to local people, and the local people also would tell to others about that. Europeans brought Christian religion to the regions they visited by colonies, like Latin America.

African tribes

Now globalization also influence the African tribes. For example, people in some of African tribes that have many traditions also use their own cell phone, which means that they need to have wifi, service, cell tower and someone else who can talk with. I think cell phones and other products can help them know more about this world that they can not learn in the remote tribes, and this also is the benefit of globalization.

Globalization

Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world, like Americanization, which makes the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. For example, religion spreads far beyond the original areas, it becomes more common that understanding more than only one language, and we can eat other countries' food without going abroad. I think globalization is beneficial for the world because it helps spread the information and resources around the globe.

Globalization has a very long history. In ancient Greek, the globalization of culture spread with the conqueror Alexander the Great, and many cities are named for Alexander in Iraq, Egypt and Turkey. The Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean also promoted the globalization, people  exchanged  their knowledge, religion and goods with each other by this. And then globalization grew by the colonies of Europeans, and they brought Christian to Latin America. Globalization developed faster in the 19th century with the Industrial Revolution and sped up in the 20th century with the development of the transportation of the air travel like plane, because people can communicate more easily and distance will not be a big limitation for the spread of the culture and goods.

Three topics

1) The population of China : China has 1,400,000,000 people, which means if you are one from the million, there still will be 1400 people same as you.

Because of such a large population, the competition in China is so strong. We are taught to study hard and realized we needed to compete with each other when we were young. I think this thing is good on the one hand, but also not good on the other hand. Competition promotes progress, so most of Chinese students study very well, especially in math. Their math levels are higher than the same age students in other country, which may will be a big superiority of China in future. But because of that, we also pay too much attention to the grade, so that sometimes we may neglect other important elements of students.

2) Internet development : 1 in 8 couples who got married last year met online, and there are 845 million people active in Facebook. If it is a real country, it will have the third largest population in the world, only smaller than China and India.

Internet develops so fast these years, and it changes our life a lot. For example, there are more and more people would like to use the Internet, like Facebook, to communicate with others. It can make the relationship between them intimater, and make the communication be easier. It also gives people a chance to meet someone they may will never know in the real life. Therefore, people will have a broader circle of acquainted, contact with more different people, even include their wife or husband in future.

3) We are living in exponential times, there will be 31 billion searches in Google per month.

This also is the representation of the Internet development, and I think it is the biggest benefit of the Internet. We can search the information we need much easier after we have Google. Because of that, resource sharing becomes much more convenient, and we can have more available information to use, don't need to spend a lot of time looking for it.

Socratic method :

[the teacher]

- Socrates met with young students in workshop just outside agora
- method : ask a series of questions to determine their underlying beliefs and the extent of their knowledge
- this led to the scientific method, in which you star out with a hypothesis, then set out to prove - or disprove - your theory through experimentation.
- I can't teach anybody anything, I only can make them think. — Socrates

[the controversy]

- Athens was a great city attracted brilliant thinkers
- visitors from all over the world shared their knowledge of astronomy, medicine, meteorology, literature, philosophy, and all things scientific

[how did that work out]
- a jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty (279-221)
- sentenced to death by drinking poison hemlock
- he had the opportunity to escape, but refused, providing his loyalty to Athenian democracy

What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot

- an idiot in Athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self- centeredness and concerned almost exclusively with private  - as opposed to public - affairs
- in Athenian democracy, idiot were born and citizens were made through education
- declaring to take part in public life, such as democratic government of the polis (city state), was considered dishonorable

Definition and the opinion

agora :
It's a marketplace in Athens where people can show their opinion to others.

polis :
It is a word in ancient Greek which means city-state, and the city-states in ancient Greek always fought with each other although they were in same country, ate same food, had same culture, because they had different government.

the importance of the year 508BC to the ancient Greeks:
It was the first time people created the concept of democracy, no one did it before. It ruled that people needed to vote the leader, and everyone had a chance to vote.

Socrates :
He's the leader of western philosophy, and he almost created the western civilization.

the death of Socrates :
He was forced to drink poison hemlock because of the disrespect of the god and the corruption of youth.

the Socratic method :
He taught people by asking people how do they feel about something and making some arguments to discuss to let people think.

what the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot :
The word idiot in ancient Greek meant that people who had no responsibility, they didn't want to anything for their country.

My opinion about the democracy

I think people making decision for government is  better than only government making it. Because sometimes the government doesn't know what people really need. If people can make decision by themselves, they will strengthen support for the government, and make much more useful rules. And most of people will feel satisfied about the government. But if government makes decision by themselves, they can take action of some projects more quickly.

Areté

Areté - ancient Greek word

- excellence of any kind
- moral virtue
- fulfillment of purpose or function
- but mostly is the act of living up to one's full potential

- areté involves all of the abilities and potentialities available to humans
- the highest human potential is knowledge
all others are derived from this
- if areté is knowledge and study
then the highest human knowledge is knowledge about knowledge itself
it's what separates us from dawgs

Agora :
Ancient marketplace
The Agora  was a central spot in ancient Greek city-states. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place" or "assembly". The agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city. Early in Greek history (18th century–8th century BC), free-born citizens would gather in the agora for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later, the agora also served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods amid colonnade.

Polis :
a city state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes. It can also mean citizenship and body of citizens. In modern historiography, polis is normally used to indicate the ancient Greek city-stat.

The importance of the year 508BC to the ancient Greeks :
In 508BC 'democracy' began in Athens. We still use this term today meaning 'ruled by the people'. Male citizens were given the chance to vote in order to decide how the city-state should be run. This is often said to be one of their greatest ideas.

Socrates :
Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western  philosophy. He is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes.

The death of Socrates :
In 399 BC Socrates was executed by the Athenian court on charges of atheism and corrupting the youth. Although his students suggested him escape, he still decided to drink the poison and died because he thought escaping only would profoundly destroyed the authority of the Athens legal, and no one could be a good tutor to teach people.

The Socrates method :
Perhaps his most important contribution to Western thought is his dialectic method of inquiry, known as the Socratic method or method of "elenchus", which he largely applied to the examination of key moral concepts such as the Good and Justice. It was first described by Plato in the Socratic Dialogues. To solve a problem, it would be broken down into a series of questions, the answers to which gradually distill the answer a person would seek. The influence of this approach is most strongly felt today in the use of the scientific method, in which hypothesis is the first stage. The development and practice of this method is one of Socrates' most enduring contributions, and is a key factor in earning his mantle as the father of political philosophy, ethics or moral philosophy, and as a figurehead of all the central themes in Western philosophy.

What the ancient Greeks meant if they called you an idiot :
In ancient Greece, the inventors of democracy set up a law that required every person to vote, regardless of who they voted for. If anyone was found not voting, the person would be publicly marked and labeled an idiot, someone who thought their own personal needs trumped those of the society around them, and over time, the word "idiot" has evolved into today's usage.

Five ways I want to do to work well in John Carroll

1. Join more clubs or activities

One of the big differences between America and China is that there are much more after-school activities in American school. I want to try more things I didn't do in China, such as art club or chorus. Now I have joined chorus and sung in alto 1. In chorus time, we sing many different songs together, although I have never joined any chorus in China, I still think it is not difficult, but really interesting.

2. Improve my English

Because I'm an international student, so my English is not very good. I want to improve it especially listening and speaking when I study in John Carroll. I take English for international and EIS class, and I think I will learn a lot from them this year.

3. Try to study playing tennis

I also joined the tennis team on Friday. I have learned tennis for a short time when I lived in China, but now I think I need to learn again because I almost forget it. I'm not good at sports, but I want to try, I think I will have a good time in tennis team.

4. Make more friends and try to be familiar with American culture

Chinese culture is very different from American, so I need time to be familiar with it. For example, most of Chinese don't believe god, and have no religion. So I have to study it from zero. I want to make more friends in John Carroll too, not only Chinese, but also American. Most of them are very friendly, and the biggest difficulty is communication, so the first thing I need to do is improving my English.

5. Learn another language

I also want to learn another language like French or Spanish next year when my TOEFL grade over 80. I think many things maybe will change after I learn the third language, and it must be amazing. I think I will like it although I can imagine how hard it is that study the third language by the second language.

A Message to Garcia

I agree with the author. Nowadays, there are fewer and fewer people who are dedicated and responsible like Garcia. Most of the people only work when their boss can see them, they even will shirk their responsibility, or do it halfheartedly if someone ask them to do something. But in my opinion, this kind of people are the most needed by society. If we can work like Garcia, don't ask too much about why we need to do this work not other people and something else which is irrelevant to the work, then we can work better and harder, have implementation capacity and are not slothful. We need to be Garcia in the work, also in the study. We can make a studying plan and do it as soon as possible, keep diligent even though no one supervise us. We can use the spirit of Garcia in everywhere in our life, and to be a person like Garcia.

In John Carroll

Today is the second day I studied in John Carroll School. It is still like a dream for me to study in America, the country which is much different from China.

Before I go there in person, I usually wonder what will happen when I start my school life. It may be very difficult for me because my English is not really good, I don't know what I should do if I can't understand what teacher says in class. And I also worried if I can make friends with American students, or if I can find someone who has the same hobby as mine. I'm not confident about my school life in future.

But when I go there, I found that the school life might would be much better than what I thought. All of the international students are good, I made many new friends from them, and we also have the same hobby, like watching movies and so on, so we always have something to talk about. We will never feel bored when we stay with each other. American students also are friendly. Yesterday I met a American girl in unscheduled time, we studied together and talked about what we wanted to be. I wanted to be a surgeon, but maybe I would change my mind in the future. She wanted to be an astronaut. I thought it was so cool! She was the first person I knew who wanted to be an astronaut! It sounded really good. Then she helped me with a little problem of my summer reading assignment.(I didn't know where I could get the form of the assignment) And today I saw her in freshman seminar again which made me feel surprised!

Teachers in John Carroll School are good too. my advisor is Mr. McIntyre, he is a really good teacher who helped me a lot, I could asked him for help no matter when. He helped me join the chorus that I liked so much. Ms. Seiler is my EIS class teacher, she is kind and thinks so much for us, and she always speaks slowly in order that we can understand her. Algebra teacher Mrs. Markel is patient, human geography teacher Mr. Schick is interesting, intro to Christianity teacher Mr. Meyerl is enthusiastic and friendly. All of teachers wanted to help us be familiar with the life in John Carroll, and tried their best to let us not feel nervous or worried. I believe that I will have a good 4-year school life in the future.

All in all, I like my friends and students in John Carroll, I like teachers in John Carroll, I like the life in John Carroll. By the way, I like Bel Air so much, it's a really beautiful place!
